Record Turnout at Palazzo dei Congressi, in Florence, for the 37th European Peptide Symposium & the 14th International Peptide Symposium

Florence, 28th August 2024. A record turnout for the 37th EUROPEAN PEPTIDE SYMPOSIUM & the 14th INTERNATIONAL PEPTIDE SYMPOSIUM, continuing until tomorrow (Thursday, 29th August) at Palazzo dei Congressi, with over 1,000 participants coming from 45 foreign countries, particularly the United States, Canada, Japan, and Germany.

Alongside the organisers and Alessandra Petrucci, Rector of the University of Florence, the opening ceremony also saw the participation of Morten Meldal, Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2022, who will be present throughout the duration of this event. Morten Meldal teaches at the University of Copenhagen, and was awarded this prestigious honorary title along with American scientists Carolyn R. Bertozzi and K. Barry Sharpless for the development of chemistry aimed at synthetic biorthogonal approaches.

Chemists and researchers of all disciplines and from all over the world met in Florence for the first time to share their knowledge and expertise on the latest advances in the field of peptides – natural molecules that can be modified, amino acid chains assembled together with increasingly advanced technologies. They can be used in various sectors and applications – from diagnostics to therapeutic technologies, and from cosmetics to the use for art and restoration materials.

“Thanks also to the support of Artificial Intelligence and multidisciplinarity – said Prof. Anna Maria Papini from the Chemistry Department of the University of Florence, Chair of the Congress alongside Prof. Paolo Rovero from the NEUROFARBA Department of the School of Human Health Sciences of the Florence University – today, we can quickly reach objectives set in the field of peptides. This is an extremely charming and continuously evolving science, that allows us to reshape important aspects of our lives and of the ecosystem”. “We are very pleased with the development of our event, taking place in Florence for the first time”, Anna Maria Papini continued. “The choice of the location – at the heart of one of the most beautiful and attractive art cities in the world – was one of the winning advantages. This was proved also by the excellent result obtained by the idea of organizing the 37th edition of the European Symposium and the 14th International Symposium simultaneously, with representatives coming from all continents, including many young researchers”.

The event is complemented by three workshops aimed at the training of young PhD researchers active in the peptide sector. The workshops will take place on 30th and 31st August at Centro Didattico Morgagni. Among them, the “TTPep” event, organised by the European University of Well-Being (EUniWell), founded by the European Commission within the Erasmus+ & Horizon 2020 programmes.
